ISA Art Gallery presents, "No Paint on Canvas," an exhibition curated by Hermanto Soerjanto that takes an approach to look into contemporary art as an ideology which allows artists to explore techniques for media, techniques, and materials in art creation. The works displayed emphasize contemporary art as a liberal platform that celebrates diversity rather than uniformity.
In this exhibition, we highlight artists in Southeast Asia, where culture and production are integral to daily life and where the unique techniques and materials used in the past are now being embraced in art creation which has a high potential to continue to evolve.
The artists featured including Alexander Sebastianus, Ari Bayuaji, Ezzam Rahman, Irfan Hendrian, Jumaadi, and Kanchana Gupta. These artists challenge common art practices, push boundaries, revisit their roots and culture, and bring them to the contemporary art stage with their expert execution of techniques and captivating narratives.

Irfan Hendrian is an artist, graphic designer, and industrial printmaker who is recognized for his abstract explorations. He primarily works with paper and is interested in the Bauhaus philosophy of minimizing, reducing, and simplifying everything to its most essential and substantial state. Hendrian's work reflects his preference for practical, rational, and effective methods of thinking and working. He employs collage as a technique that adheres to his minimalist approach to materials. He views paper as a sculptural medium, and his artistic process involves arranging visual elements to create a specific aesthetic outcome rather than generating images.
Hendrian studied at LASALLE College of Arts, Singapore and Wanganui School of Design, New Zealand, before completing an MA at Bandung Institute of Technology in 2016. He has held several solo shows, these include "Incognito" at Art Jakarta 2022, "Constructed-scape" at Sullivan+Strumpf in Singapore 2020. "Forthcoming" at Aloft at Hermes in Singapore 2019, and "SANS" at Sullivan+Strumpf in Singapore 2018. His works have also been collected by several institutions such as Deutsche Bank in Germany, Jeonbuk Museum of Art in South Korea, Singapore Art Museum, and Tumurun Museum in Solo, Indonesia.
Irfan Hendrian' works will be available to see in our upcoming exhibition, "No Paint on Canvas” at Wisma 46.
The Embassy of Ireland in collaboration with ISA Art Gallery and Ruang MES 56 bring the "Ireland‘s Eye" exhibition to Yogyakarta. Curated by Mark Joyce from the Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Mata Irlandia, or 'Ireland's Eye' is an exhibition exploring the idea of the visual arts as a critical 'eye' on an increasingly connected yet polarizing world.
In this exhibition, there are important questions around what constitutes our individual, communal, and national identities. What defines us? Is it the clothing we wear, manufactured on the other side of the world, or is it the equally globalized digital content we consume? Could it be our intimate family histories, which are intertwined with social histories, or is it found in our attitudes towards inward migration and the acceptance of new communities? Are we paying enough attention to the subtle changes in our environment that will impact our ability to produce food in an unpredictable world climate in the future?
The five Irish artists, Lucy Peters, Mandy O'Neill, Michelle Malone, Myfanwy Frost Jones, and Orla Comerford, are trying to explore these critical questions around climate change, globalization, social inequality, and rapid technological change from the unique perspective of an island perched between the European and American continents in their artworks.
