ISA JANUARY NEWSLETTER

UPCOMING | BASA-BASI
Ida Lawrence at ARTSG

ISA Art Gallery | ART SG
Booth FC15 Marina Bay Sands, Singapore
January 11th -15th 2023

To start the new year, ISA Art Gallery will participate in ART SG’s Focus sector and present a new painting series by Ida Lawrence, Basa- Basi (Chit-Chat). The show highlights the popular greetings and expressions known as basa-basi (chit-chat), frequently used in Indonesia to establish social connections but commonly repeated solely out of habit.

This series of paintings are inspired by a variety of sources, including street signs, architecture, tropical fruit, the rhythms of language, batik patterns, and the short stories of Lydia Davis. Lawrence's paintings are meant to be playful and humorous, but they also contain deeper layers of meaning, exploring themes such as social expectations, cultural gestures, value systems, colonial histories, and the absurdity of everyday life. This collection of paintings invites viewers to interact through witty juxtapositions of well-known or unexpected imagery and through storytelling and humour.

ISA Art Gallery presents 'Taru Bingin,' an exhibition that challenges the constricting perspective often associated with Bali. Intercultural interactions have impacts on a place's ability to build its culture, in this case, Bali. Each generation of artists contributes to the canon of Balinese art by revisiting the past in the context of their generational and interpersonal situations, reclaiming agency in their creations, and separating themselves from the dominant monolithic representation of Bali. "Taru Bingin" aims to explore a standard narrative among the displayed artists and offers a chance to appreciate the diversity and depth of Balinese art. It challenges the common portrayal of Bali and its culture, explores the narrative threads and commonalities that connect them, and considers the future of Balinese art.
