TITICARA
ISA Art & Design has held an annual exhibition since 2017 showcasing women artists. For the 2022 edition, ISA is collaborating with Syagini Ratna Wulan, a notable Indonesian artist to select the artist to be included in the show. Syagini and ISA Art & Design have observed several women artists who work on exploring materials for their artwork, carrying the theme of the relationship between the artist, materials, concept, & technique. For the younger artists who are included, Syagini seeks to mentor them to explore new mediums for their art.
This exhibition carries the method of artist curating artists. Curator who is also an artist will not overstep the themes, styles and tendencies of the selected artists. Her role is more of a facilitator of opening discussions who support the development of the artists' works in terms of technique. The selected artists have different experiences, ages, mediums, ideas, and artistic styles. This diversity can be the basis for complementary discussions, where both curator and artist or among artists can share and complement each other.
Art and materiality is a common theme in 21st-century art. Many influential women artists have explored unique materials in their art practice to convey their concept and ideas through the materials used. The exhibition entitled "Titicara" was chosen by Syagini Ratna Wulan and had the meaning of the method's scope. Syagini tries to see the diversity of media and material treatment of various artists with different backgrounds in this exhibition as the identity of female artists.
This exhibition will be filled with works that explore medium and form. Syagini has chosen to introduce 17 diverse and dynamic female artists. This exhibit enables the sharing of individual experiences that explore unexpected materials and unconventional creation methods. The participating artists are; Aurora Arazzi (Indonesia), Corinne De San Jose (Philippines), Dawn Ng (Singapore), Donna Ong (Singapore), Ella Wijt (Indonesia), Elia Nuvista (Indonesia), Erna Garnasih Pirous (Indonesia), Etza Meisyara (Indonesia), Ines Katamso (Indonesia), Kanoko Takaya, Melissa Tan (Singapore) Sekarputi Sidhawati (Japan), Tara Kasenda (Indonesia), Yosefa Aulia (Indonesia), Leyla Stevens (Australia) Vienasty Rezqina (Indonesia), and Putri Larasati (Indonesia).

Abstractionism is known to have emerged in the early 20th century after cubism overhauled established space forms. The trend of abstract style is divided into two broad lines: geometric abstraction and organic abstraction. Geometric abstraction includes expressions based on straight line elements and geometric shapes to shapes that describe rational and intellectual characters. Organic abstraction is a non-geometric abstraction that includes organic expressions.
These abstract styles inspired this exhibition entitled, Through Line, an individual experience-sharing exhibition that explores abstract works with different creation methods.
Drawn from the collection and curation of ISA Art Gallery, Through Line displays artists who use the abstract method but still contain their individual character and uniqueness in the lines and strokes of their works. This exhibition showcases several abstract artists who use precision geometry and natural organic shapes or objects to communicate themes and ideas by exploring visual forms of shapes, color, and vivid lines. The participating artists include A. Sebastianus, Hannah Shin, Marissa R Ng, Sinta Tantra, Taufiq HT, Yogie Ginajar, and Yuki Nakayama.
ARTIST HIGHLIGHT
Corinne de San Jose is a multidisciplinary artist and an award-winning film sound designer based in Manila, Philippines. She has explored different media including photography, video, sound, and installations. Her works revolve around the concept of time; patience & journey. Using her artworks as if it’s her own personal journal that she uses to present her ideas to the public, using suitable mediums to the theme. For Women's Show at ISA Gallery, de San Jose will be participating by exhibiting her artworks with a series of prints: ‘Bubble Graphs’ & ‘The Shore Is Parchment’. She marks her exploration in mediums & techniques by using the methods of cyanotype & gathering around various materials that’ll be used in the cyanotype, consisting of Digital Materials & Organic Chemicals (i.e. Digital Negatives, Salt, Cocoa) and then creating a collage out of the mixed materials.
In ‘Bubble Graphs’ she used images generated from signals and screens such as spectrograms of field recordings of ocean waves, the artist’s mantra visualized, maps of underground submarine cables, google image search results, and screen-captured cut outs of Van Gogh’s Roses Paintings. The different visual elements are rendered as digital negatives and later on collaged into cyanotypes and screen-captured cutouts of Van Gogh’s Roses Paintings. While ‘The Shore Is Parchment’ is a part of a series of large-scale cyanotypes created onsite in different beaches in the Philippines. Utilizing Organic Materials to make marks above the cyanotype prints. The work is about relinquishing control and allowing the environment and conditions thereof, to be a collaborator in the final work. Using themes of repetition & experimentations, we can enjoy a fresh perspective coming from de San Jose; Reimagining mindspaces & new meanings of meditations and journey.
