Bandu Darmawan's new work explores the subjective nature of colorization methods used in scientific imaging (MRI) as part of his research on capturing imagery beyond the visible spectrum. Understanding the need to make complex data readable, pseudocolor—which depends on convention and is open to personal interpretation.
Darmawan aims to turn the distressing vision into visually pleasing pieces by applying colors he finds beautiful. By manipulating this, he explores the relationship between subjective experience and artistic interpretation, aiming to address and reduce the fear related to medical imaging.
Jumaadi is currently featured in the 'Tales of Land and Sea' exhibitionthat explore cross-generational experiences that examine mythical tales, storytelling, migration, and the experience of being a diaspora.
The intricate paintings by Jumaadi on buffalo skin and fabric are highlights such as longing, displacement, cultural connection, and belonging. The Eastern Bali Kamasan tradition served as his technique's inspiration, the figures' flattened perspective in Kamasan paintings, which were traditionally used in religious ceremonies.
