San Francisco-based Mexican artist Alex Hernandez employs cyanotypes of found antlers and plants, meticulously quilted alongside denim, and various remnants of blue fabric. Through this artistic process, he weaves together multifaceted narratives that intricately intertwine elements of his cultural heritage and queer sensibilities. The playful patchwork and intricately embellished denim serve as symbolic representations of his personal journey, illustrating the fusion of past experiences with aspirations for growth and transformation. Inspired by both drag culture and his Catholic upbringing, Hernandez infuses the character of Saint Azul with theatrical flair, portraying a vibrant embodiment of resilience and spiritual exploration. Adorned with angelic appliques and religious imagery, Saint Azul emerges as a captivating symbol of identity and self-discovery within Hernandez's artistic expression. Furthermore, Hernandez's artwork reflects the queer tradition of repurposing found objects to convey personal narratives. This practice, reminiscent of the inventive resourcefulness seen in drag culture, allows everyday items to be transformed into powerful tools of self-expression and empowerment, amplifying the complexity of identity in contemporary society.
