Anang Saptoto’s practice revolves around community-based art, exploring its sustainability and impact on the wider community. Employing historical photographic printing techniques such as lumen printing, cyanotype, and photogram, Saptoto harnesses the alchemy of light and organic matter to inscribe narratives of resistance onto fragile yet resilient surfaces. These methods, traditionally used for preservation, are here reimagined as acts of defiance—an assertion of agency over processes of forgetting. Through the Panen Apa Hari Ini (Pari) project, the very materials of production—fragments of the agrarian landscape—become embedded within the work, transforming into spectral visages of ecological consciousness. The layering of these agricultural remnants into facial compositions serves as a meditation on the interconnectedness of human and non-human ecologies, resisting the abstraction of nature into mere commodity. Rooted in collaborative and participatory methodologies, Saptoto’s work resists dominant systems of power through an art practice that foregrounds communal knowledge.
