Zico Albaiquni Indonesian, b. 1987

Overview

Zico Albaiquni (b. 1987, Indonesia) creates vibrant figurative and landscape paintings that engage with Indonesian art history and painterly representation. His work often references Mooi Indie, a genre depicting romanticized Indonesian landscapes during Dutch colonial rule, while also drawing from its tonal formulas to develop his unique color palette. Albaiquni explores the connections between art, advertising, and the commodification of landscapes to address contemporary environmental issues. His large-scale works frequently challenge traditional perspectives through trompe l’oeil illusions and experimental compositions, incorporating elements like his studio or public spaces into the artwork.

Albaiquni holds an MA and BFA from the Institute of Technology, Bandung, and has exhibited widely in Indonesia and internationally, including Australia, Italy, France, Austria, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Notable exhibitions include Contemporary Worlds: Indonesia at the National Gallery of Australia and the 9th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. He has been a finalist for several prestigious awards, including the Asia Award at Tokyo Design Week, and was awarded a residency in Austria, which led to two solo exhibitions in Vienna. His work is held in collections such as the Queensland Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Australia, Singapore Art Museum, and Museum MACAN in Indonesia.
