Since 2006, the flag project is an ongoing series of performances and exhibitions that are comprised of texts stitched onto a series of colorful flags as a medium to engage with local communities. During the performance, the artist acts as the facilitator and mediator of an 'open art system'. The flags would then be waved around in a parade with a traditional orchestrated sound playing in the background. Based on democratic tools, this allows the communities to organically express their thoughts in the form of collective, collaborative and individual works. The system creates a sustainable network of communities to identify creative solutions that are considered relevant or crucial within their surroundings. Initially started with the Amumarta Pesantren [Islamic boarding school] after a major earthquake hit Yogyakarta in 2006, the project has gone through several implementations in various communities in Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Japan, China, Tibet, Germany and Belgium. The flag project consists of three different series; 'Global' Flag Project involves 34 flags and key words derived from various nations, recently exhibited at the museum of ceramic and fine arts in Jakarta Indonesia under an exhibition titled 'We Lived Amongst Ghosts'. 'Global' Flag Project which consists of 12 flags comprise of keywords written in Malay Arabic (Jawi) is now a permanent collection of the Singapore Art Museum. The 'Nusantara' Flag Project made up of 37 pieces with key words from different tribes across the Indonesian archipelago.
